ELINA SIMONEN
I am a photographer and visual storyteller, and one of Finland’s most respected in my field. My work brings together the visual impact of advertising imagery with the intimacy and presence of portrait photography. From my studio in central Helsinki, while continuing international projects, I have created images for over two decades that stay with people.
My journey began boldly in my early twenties, moving from Espoo straight into London’s fast-paced fashion world. With a Finnish work ethic, sharp eye, and natural confidence, I quickly adapted to the demands of the industry and earned the trust of leading creatives. I learned photography in the traditional way — on film, by assisting, experimenting, and developing my craft under the guidance of top London professionals. This foundation sets me apart in today’s digital-only industry, giving me the best of both worlds: analog depth and digital fluency.
Coming from the North where light is limited, I have learned to master the lighting in different surroundings. In studio or on location, I transform studio light into atmospheric, natural, and unique.
What matters to me most is presence. My calm and intuitive approach helps people feel at ease and truly seen. Over the years, I have captured the essence of countless people, and my portraits have been published in all of Finland’s leading magazines.
Beyond my work with clients, I share my experience as a mentor to younger photographers. Just as with my subjects, I approach mentoring with warmth, clarity, and a touch of elegance.
Next year, I celebrate my over 20-year career with the book 20 Years of Photography, a tribute to my creative journey and the enduring passion that keeps me inspired to create, one captivating image at a time.
